WINTER CHECKLIST
Service your Heating System:
Winters in the North East can be brutal. If your heating system fails during these months it can create some big problems. It's always a good idea to have your heating system serviced prior to winters. Replace batteries in thermostat .
Protect your water supply pipes from freezing:
Insulate pipes that may be prone to freezing. Areas of concern would be crawlspaces, unheated rooms, basements, garage and exterior walls. For drafty windows, insulate walls and attic.
Have a certified chimney sweep company check and clean your chimney :
You should have your chimney flues and fireplace dampers inspected annually. The inspection usually checks for any animals that may have nested inside the chimney. Cleaning regularly helps keep you and your family safer when you start using your chimney. A chimney sweep can also inspect gas lines for leaves and rest of system for any other concerns and defective components. This will help ensure that there is not a risk for explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning .
Clean Gutters And Downspouts:
Snow and sleet can cause damage to your roof and interior of house if not kept clean of debris. Ice can occur during winter months and cause damage.
Replace Batteries in your Smoke and Carbon Detectors / Alarms:
It's always a good idea to replace batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at least once a year as manufacturer recommends. This is the time of year you use your fireplace and heating system more often. Test and replace all safety devices as needed.
Keep Makeup Air intakes and Vents clean:
Air intakes and ducts provide needed fresh outdoor air for heating system and makeup air for exhaust fans (kitchen, bathroom and fireplaces), Clean clothes dryer duct. Inspect the damper (flapper) on outside to make sure it moves freely. Check bathroom and kitchen exhaust dampers for blockages.
